A WordNet is a large lexical database of a language. Nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are grouped into sets of cognitive synonyms (synsets), each expressing a distinct concept. Synsets are interlinked by means of conceptual-semantic and lexical relations. The resulting network of meaningfully related words and concepts can be navigated with a browser. A WordNet's structure makes it a useful tool for computational linguistics and natural language processing.
The above description is taken from the original English WordNet, which was developed at Princeton University. This Serbian dictionary is seeded with data from version 3.0 of that original English WordNet. New words added to the dictionary are associated to their English synsets and can be traversed via synonymy, hyponymy, and other semantic relationships. This means that translation and other language processing tools can be developed using this data. Thus, every word you teach me helps increase the computational power of the Serbian language.
Since the project leverages the Princeton WordNet and involves contributions from many people along the way, data from the Serbian WordNet is freely available to other language researchers.
